Katie DeSpain

2021 Undergraduate Winner

Daimler Scholarship Winner

Katie is a senior at Rice University majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering. She is also earning a certificate in Engineering Leadership and currently serves as the president of Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honor society. Katie grew up in Portland, OR and has always had a love of the outdoors and a respect for nature. Katie's goal when she decided to pursue engineering was to have a positive impact on the planet and the people who live here, which is something she intends to pursue through a career in renewable energy. Through previous experiences volunteering with Grid Alternatives, where she installed solar panels in low-income areas, and her internship with Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses, where she managed and optimized large-scale wind and solar farms across the US, Katie has developed the background and experience necessary to begin working in this industry after graduation. She will be starting her career at Invenergy in June, where she will work to develop utility-scale wind and solar farms to help create a clean energy future.
