Joelle Scott is a fourth-year PhD candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington (UW). She received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree in Chemical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University. Her graduate research focuses on developing advanced materials for complex contaminant removal from water. This includes utilizing vapor-phase polymer synthesis to fabricate new membrane chemistries for PFAS remediation, and using reaction-diffusion coupling in hydrogels to assess its effect on selectively separating heavy metal ions from battery wastewater. Paying it forward from her previous mentors and examples of women in STEM, she focuses her efforts on mentorship and outreach in addition to research. In the lab, she has mentored three highly-successful undergraduate women. As her research group's Community Director and a UW Clean Energy Institute Graduate Fellow, she has led and participated in a variety of STEM-focused outreach activities at UW and in the Seattle community. After graduation, Joelle plans to pursue a career in water treatment technology research and/or materials for sustainability.
